Eco Church

In 2021, St Mary’s formed an Eco Church team.

We began to look at how we can make better environmental use of our land, reduce our carbon emissions at a church and individual level, work with our Just Transition campaign to make London a greener and fairer city, and educate our church and community about the environmental challenges we’re facing and what we can do about them.

We want to live and work more sustainably, and to be part of repairing God’s creation.

The Eco Church team have already held a Climate Sunday service to explore the theological reasons for engaging with climate change and the nature crisis, got agreement from St Mary’s and the wider Parish of Walthamstow to pass a Climate Emergency declaration and and have completed a survey as part of A Rocha UK’s Eco Church scheme for churches and were recently awarded Silver.

The Eco Church team are keen to partner on projects of mutual interest with other groups, including St Mary’s Outreach Team, XR Waltham Forest, the Just Transition campaign, gardeners from St Mary’s ‘Burials in Bloom’ scheme, and the gardeners from Walthamstow Village in Bloom/ Walthamstow Village Residents’ Association.
