St Mary’s Walthamstow started what is today St Mary’s Primary School in 1824 when our then-vicar Revd William Wilson began educating children in a barn on church property.
Several years later, in 1828, the school moved into the first purpose-built Church of England infants’ school in the country, which is now the church hall (‘The St Mary’s Welcome Centre’).
Today, our church still has strong links with St Mary’s Primary School: our clergy lead assemblies at the school every Monday morning during term time, two of our church members are school governors, and our Rector, Vanessa, is an ex-officio governor. St Mary’s School children also visit the church several times per year, and we offer regular opportunities for parents to get together and pray.
