St Mary’s Sunflower-growing Competition

Whether you are a keen gardener or a complete beginner, you are welcome to take part in St Mary’s Sunflower-growing Competition!

Open to all ages, we hope this year’s competition will create a border of sunflowers of all types and varieties.

To take part, bring along a sunflower you’ve recently started to grow between 30 May and 3 June and plant it in our soon to be specially-designated sunflower patch. You will at that time be able to mark which is your sunflower, and over the summer, we will watch them grow.

On Thursday 25 August we will measure which is the tallest and most beautiful.

Whichever variety you choose, please bring a sunflower that has already begun to grow. You can pick up sunflower seeds in many places, but if you would like an already-started plant, Forest Flora will be selling them on Saturday 21 May from 12-1.30pm outside St Mary’s Church as part of the Chelsea Fringe Event.

The funds from these sunflowers will go towards supporting those in crisis in Ukraine.

If you would like to take part in St Mary’s Summer Sunflower-growing Competition, contact our head gardener Tim Hewitt at tim@stmaryswalthamstow.org for more details.
