Vespers is an open environment for people exploring faith, just looking for a quiet space or interested in practicing contemplation, mindfulness or contemplative prayer.
Vespers normally happens every Wednesday at 7.30pm in a candlelit St Mary’s and lasts exactly 40 minutes; however, since the pandemic began, Vespers has gone online, and every Wednesday we release a new online service here on our website and through our social media channels via the digital platform Shorthand.
From 8 September 2021, we will again be meeting in person, though this time in the St Mary’s Welcome Centre, which is our church hall, located across the churchyard from the church building. We will also continue to offer an online version of Vespers for those who are unable to join us in the Welcome Centre.
Each Vespers gathering features two periods of silence (a shorter period of silence and then a longer period of silence lasting 10 minutes), a short reflection, a contemplative practice to try and two pieces of choral or instrumental music. We usually have a short Scripture reading and a poem as well. While we draw on 2,000 years of Christian contemplative practice, we believe Vespers holds wisdom for everyone, regardless of their background or beliefs.
