Bell-ringing

St Mary's bells have been ringing for hundreds of years and today ringers practice on Wednesdays and ring before services and other special events.

The first recorded mention of a bell tower at St Mary’s was in 1431, and over the centuries the bells have been added to (eight bells became 10 in 1896) and refurbished (the full peal of 10 was last refurbished in 2016). Bell-ringing not only serves as a way of calling people to worship, but is also used to mark everything from weddings to significant local and national events.

The team of ringers at St Mary’s are part of the Essex Association of Change Ringers and welcome anyone to join them on Wednesdays at 7.30pm for practice, including those with no previous bell-ringing experience. St Mary’s bell-ringers ring on Sundays from 10-10.30am, before the late morning worship service at St Mary’s. To join the team or for more information, contact
